Dead Tree Removal in Anchorage
Most dead trees removed in Anchorage are spruce killed by beetles. How the job is done depends on one thing above all: how many years the tree has been dead.
Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are answered by an independent tree service provider.

How long can a dead spruce wait?
Plan to remove a beetle-killed spruce within about three years of death if it could reach a building, driveway, trail or power line. After that the lower trunk and roots weaken, and the tree can no longer be climbed or relied on to fall where it is aimed.
- Year one
- Needles turn yellow-green, then red-brown. The wood is still sound.
- Years two and three
- Needles and fine twigs drop. Bark loosens. Still workable by conventional methods.
- Year five and beyond
- Butt and root decay. The tree may snap at the base in an ordinary Hillside gust.
How a dead spruce removal is carried out

Sounding the trunk
The crew strikes the lower trunk and checks the root collar. A hollow note or soft wood changes the plan.
Choosing the method
Where there is room, a dead spruce is felled whole in a set direction. Near houses it is climbed and sectioned only if the wood passes inspection. Otherwise a lift or crane is used.
Limbing and bucking
Dry spruce limbs are brittle and shatter on impact, so drop zones are kept wide.
Stump and slash
Stumps are cut low. Slash is chipped or hauled because dry branches are fuel.
Method by setting
| Setting | Usual method | What changes the job |
|---|---|---|
| Open lot with a clear lane | Directional felling | Number of trees. Several in one visit is more efficient. |
| Within a tree length of the house | Sectioning from a lift, or climbing if sound | Lift access across the lot |
| Long dead, over a structure | Crane removal | Crane time and road setup |
| Steep Hillside or Eagle River slope | Roped felling or climbing | Footing, haul distance for wood |
What happens to the wood
Beetle-killed spruce that has dried standing is good firewood, and many owners keep it. Wood from a tree dead for several years carries no live beetles and can be stacked without concern.
Wood from a tree attacked this season is different. Larvae may still be under the bark, and adults emerge in the following spring. If you keep it, state foresters advise splitting it and letting it dry in the open, away from living spruce, or debarking it.
Hauling adds to the job. Ask the company to describe it both ways: logs cut to stove length and left on site, and everything removed.
Why this is not a weekend chainsaw job
- Tops break out
- The vibration of the saw can drop a dead top onto the person cutting below.
- Hinges fail
- Dry, decayed wood does not hold a felling hinge. The tree can go sideways.
- Hang-ups
- In dense stands a dead spruce often lodges in its neighbor, the most dangerous situation in tree felling.
- Power lines
- Spruce near the service drop need the utility to disconnect it first.
Signs a dead spruce is past the safe window
Bark sloughing in sheets
Usually three or more years dead.
Conks or soft, punky wood at the base
Butt rot. Felling behavior is unpredictable.
Carpenter ant frass at the root collar
The lower trunk is hollowing.
A lean that was not there last summer
Roots are letting go.
What decides the size of the job
- Count
- Beetle kill comes in groups. Removing ten at once is far more efficient than ten visits.
- Years dead
- Longer means more equipment.
- Targets
- Trees that can be felled freely are a fraction of the work of those over a roof.
- Season
- Frozen ground in winter lets equipment reach trees it could not in summer. See dead tree removal for the general method.
Anchorage dead spruce questions
Should I remove beetle-killed spruce that are far from the house?
Not necessarily. Dead trees away from buildings, trails and lines can be left for wildlife. Remove those that could hit something or that add fuel near the home.
Can a dead spruce be climbed in Anchorage?
Only if the trunk and base are still sound, which is typical in the first two or three years. Older dead trees are taken down from a lift or by crane, or felled.
Will removing dead spruce protect my living ones?
It does not stop beetles already in the area, because they have left the dead tree. Promptly removing freshly infested trees and fresh blowdown does help.
Is winter a good time for dead spruce removal?
Yes. Frozen ground improves access and there is no beetle flight. Deep snow and short days slow the work somewhat.
