Tree Removal and Tree Service in Alaska
Since 2016 a spruce beetle outbreak has killed spruce across well over a million acres of Southcentral Alaska, including yards in Anchorage, the Mat-Su and the Kenai Peninsula. Dead spruce near a house is both a falling hazard and wildfire fuel, and the season you cut it in matters.
Living with the spruce beetle outbreak
Spruce beetles are native to Alaska and always present at low levels. Warm summers and a supply of wind-thrown trees let the population explode in the Susitna Valley around 2016, and it spread through the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Anchorage and the northern Kenai Peninsula.
The beetles prefer large white and Lutz spruce. An attacked tree shows reddish boring dust in bark crevices and at the base, then small globs of pitch on the trunk. Needles fade to yellow-green and red the following year and drop soon after.
A spruce dead for two or three years is still fairly sound. After five or more the roots and lower trunk decay, and the tree may fall in the next wind. That is the practical window for an ordinary removal.
Wind, snow and ice events

- Mat-Su windstorm, January 2022
- Several days of gusts above 80 mph out of the Matanuska Valley toppled trees and damaged buildings in Palmer and Wasilla during deep cold.
- Anchorage windstorms
- Strong southeast winds along the Hillside bring down spruce and cottonwood most autumns and winters.
- Interior ice and snow, December 2021
- Freezing rain followed by heavy snow around Fairbanks bent and broke birch across the area.
- Southeast rain and wind
- Saturated slopes in the Panhandle send hemlock and spruce downhill with the soil.
Alaska yard trees
| Tree | Region | Typical concern |
|---|---|---|
| White and Lutz spruce | Southcentral and Interior | Beetle-kill. Shallow roots over cold soil. |
| Paper birch | Southcentral and Interior | Trunk decay, snow and ice breakage, leaf miners and other insects thinning the crown |
| Black cottonwood and balsam poplar | River valleys and older neighborhoods | Very large, fast-decaying limbs and trunks |
| Black spruce | Wet and permafrost sites | Leans as frozen ground thaws. A significant fire fuel. |
| Sitka spruce and western hemlock | Southeast and Kodiak | Windthrow on wet, shallow soil |
Rules, wood handling and hiring
Alaska has no arborist license and no state permit for removing trees on private residential land. Ordinary state and municipal business licensing applies to tree companies. Some subdivisions have covenants on clearing, and work near salmon streams or lakeshores can involve borough setback rules.
State foresters give specific advice on timing. Adult spruce beetles fly from about mid-May through July and are attracted to freshly cut or fallen spruce. Cut green spruce in fall or winter where possible, and do not leave fresh logs with bark on stacked near living spruce in spring.
The pool of tree companies is small outside Anchorage and the Mat-Su. Ask for insurance certificates and for experience with dead spruce in particular, because long-dead trees cannot be climbed and are taken down with a lift or felled.
Firewise clearing around an Alaska home
Start at the house
Remove spruce, dead grass and firewood piles from the first several feet around the building.
Thin out to 30 feet
Take out dead spruce and enough live conifers that crowns do not touch. Keep birch and aspen, which burn less readily.
Limb up what remains
Prune conifer branches to six to eight feet above the ground.
Deal with the slash
Chip it, haul it to a borough wood lot, or burn it under a permit when conditions allow.
What the seasons allow
- Winter
- Frozen ground carries equipment across muskeg and lawns. Daylight is short and extreme cold makes wood and machinery brittle.
- Breakup
- Thawing ground in April and May is soft. Access to many lots is poor.
- Summer
- Long days and the busiest season. Burn suspensions are common in dry spells.
- Fall
- The preferred time to cut live or recently infested spruce, after beetle flight ends.
Alaska tree service questions
Can a spruce be saved once beetles attack it?
Not once it is heavily attacked. Preventive insecticide sprays applied to the trunk before beetle flight protect high-value spruce that are still healthy. Systemic treatments are also used by licensed applicators.
Is beetle-killed spruce good firewood?
Yes once dry. To avoid spreading beetles, do not move freshly infested wood with bark on to areas with healthy spruce, and store new spruce firewood away from living trees.
Do I need a permit to clear trees on my Alaska lot?
Generally not. Check subdivision covenants and any borough rules near water. Burning slash usually requires a burn permit during fire season.
How long can a dead spruce stand safely?
There is no fixed number, but risk climbs after about five years as the base decays. Trees within reach of a house, driveway or power line should come down sooner.
