Tree trimming cost by height

Tree heightTypical rangeHow the work is done
Up to 30 feet$250 to $700Pole tools and ladders, or a short climb
30 to 60 feet$600 to $1,200Climber on rope, or a bucket truck

What a pruning quote is really pricing

Scope
Removing three low limbs is an hour. Cleaning dead wood from a whole mature crown is most of a day.
Branch size
Large limbs are cut in sections and lowered. Small ones are simply dropped.
What is under the tree
Roofs, glass, fences and gardens all slow the work.
Years since last pruned
Neglected trees have accumulated dead wood, stubs and crossing limbs.
Species
Wide-spreading trees such as live oak take longer than upright ones of the same height.
Number of trees
Per-tree prices fall when a crew prunes several in one visit.

A cheap topping job costs more in the end

Proper pruning

  • Selective cuts at branch unions
  • No more than about a quarter of the foliage removed
  • Tree keeps its natural shape
  • Next pruning in three to five years

Topping

  • Fast, unskilled and often the lowest bid
  • Large stub cuts that decay
  • Dense, weak regrowth that needs cutting again in a year or two
  • Shortens the tree's life and raises its failure risk

Topping looks cheaper once and costs more over ten years. The standard pruning types are described under tree trimming and pruning.

How companies quote trimming

Per tree
The most common for homes. A fixed price for a described scope.
Per job
One price for everything on the walk-through list.
Hourly or day rate
A crew and equipment for a set time. Works for many small tasks. Ask how many people and what equipment are included.
Minimum charge
Most companies have one to cover mobilizing a crew.

Getting good value

Be specific. "Remove dead branches over two inches, raise the crown to clear the roof by six feet" produces comparable quotes. "Trim the tree" does not.

Prune young trees. A structural pruning visit on a ten-year-old tree is inexpensive and prevents the weak forks that become costly failures later.

Book in the slow season for your region, and combine trees. If a neighbor needs work too, a shared visit can lower both bills.

Tree trimming cost questions

Is cleanup included in a trimming price?

Usually. Chipping brush and raking are standard. Confirm that hauling larger wood is included if big limbs are coming off.

Does the utility trim trees near power lines for free?

Utilities prune for clearance around their own distribution lines at no charge to the owner, on their schedule and to their standard. The service line to your house is typically yours to keep clear. See tree on a power line.

How often will I need to pay for trimming?

For most mature shade trees, every three to five years. Fast growers near buildings may need attention more often.

Is trimming cheaper than removal?

For the same tree, almost always. If pruning solves the problem, it costs a fraction of removal and keeps the tree's shade and value.
