Fallen Tree Removal
Fallen tree removal means cutting a downed tree into pieces that can be moved, hauling or chipping them, and dealing with the upturned root plate or broken stump left behind. Where the tree landed decides how urgent it is and who pays.
Call availability varies by area and time of day. Calls are answered by an independent tree service provider.

A tree is down. What happens next?
Check for wires and damage, photograph the scene, then decide how fast it has to move. A tree on a building or across your only exit is urgent. A tree lying in the yard can be scheduled like any other job.
- Look before you touch
- Follow the trunk and branches end to end for wires, fence tension and anything pinned beneath.
- Document
- Photos of the whole tree, the break or roots, and anything it hit. You need them for insurance and for any dispute about ownership.
- Sort urgent from not
- Blocked access or structural contact goes to emergency tree removal. Everything else can be quoted normally.
Where it landed, and what that means
| Tree is on | Who usually handles removal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Your house, garage or fence | You, through your homeowners policy | Removal from a covered structure is normally part of the claim. |
| Your driveway, blocking access | You; often insured | Many policies cover removal when a driveway or accessibility ramp is blocked, even with no structural damage. |
| Your lawn, touching nothing | You, out of pocket | Insurers generally do not pay to remove a tree that damaged nothing. |
| Your yard, but it came from next door | You, for the part on your side | The neighbor is typically liable only if they knew the tree was dead or dangerous. See neighbor's tree fell in my yard. |
| A public street or sidewalk | City or county crews | Report it. Do not pay to clear the right-of-way unless told to. |
| Power lines | The electric utility | Stay away and report it. See tree on a power line. |
General patterns only. Your policy and state law control.
A tree on the ground is still loaded
A fallen tree looks finished. It is not. Branches underneath are bent like springs and hold the trunk off the ground, and the trunk itself may be twisted between two supports.
Each cut changes the balance. Wood closes on the saw bar on the compression side and tears open on the tension side. Release the wrong limb and the trunk drops or rolls toward you. Crews read these forces before every cut and work from the tips inward so the tree settles a little at a time.
Uprooted trees add one more hazard. When enough weight is cut off the top, the root plate can swing back into its hole, taking the stump section with it. Nobody should stand in that hole or behind the root plate, and children should be kept well away from it.

How a downed tree is cleared
Free what is trapped
Fences, vehicles and lines are identified, and cuts are planned so nothing shifts onto them.
Limb from the tips in
Brush is removed and chipped first, exposing the trunk and the branches bearing weight.
Buck the trunk
The stem is cut into lengths a person or loader can move, with wedges where the saw would bind.
Deal with the base
A snapped trunk leaves a tall stump to cut low. An uprooted tree leaves a root plate that is cut free and then pushed back, hauled or ground.
Haul and rake
Logs go on the truck or are stacked. The lawn is raked and ruts filled if the quote includes it.
Insurance in two paragraphs
Standard homeowners policies pay to remove a fallen tree when a covered cause such as wind, lightning or the weight of ice brought it down and it damaged an insured structure or blocks the driveway. Limits for the tree work are often around $500 per tree and $1,000 per event, on top of the repair coverage for the building.
A tree that fell from rot or age, or that landed on open lawn, is usually not covered at all. Read the fuller explanation in does insurance cover tree removal before you file, since a small claim may not exceed your deductible.
What is left once the tree is gone
Ask how each of these will be handled, and whether it is in the price.
- The root plate
- An uprooted tree leaves a disk of roots and soil that can be six to ten feet across. It can be ground, or hauled away as part of a full stump removal.
- The crater
- The hole where the roots tore out needs fill soil and will settle for a season or two.
- A broken stump
- A trunk that snapped leaves a jagged stub that is cut flush, then ground out if you want lawn there.
- Logs
- Haul-off is priced by volume. Leaving firewood-length rounds on site saves money.
- Lawn and fence damage
- Tree companies generally do not repair turf, irrigation or fencing unless it is written into the job.
How soon does it need to move?
- Act now
It rests on a roof, wall, vehicle or the only driveway
Call the same day. Ongoing load and blocked access are both urgent.
- This week
It leans on a fence, shed or another tree
Book within a few days. Partially supported trees shift, and the fence or shed keeps taking weight.
- Plan it
It lies on open ground
Schedule at your convenience. Waiting a week or two after a regional storm often brings lower prices.
- Plan it
It fell in a wooded area away from use
It can stay. Downed wood is good habitat and breaks down by itself.
Fallen tree questions
Who do I call to remove a fallen tree?
A tree service for trees on private property, the city or county for trees in a public street, and the electric utility for anything touching power lines. If the tree hit your house, call your insurer as well.
How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?
Usually less than removing the same tree standing, because no climbing is needed. Many downed trees on open ground are cleared for a few hundred dollars. A tree on a structure costs more because it must be lifted off piece by piece.
Will the city remove a tree that fell from the street onto my yard?
Cities normally clear the street and sidewalk. Whether they remove the part on your lot depends on local policy and who owned the tree. Report it and ask before hiring anyone.
Can I cut up a fallen tree myself?
Small trees lying flat with no tension can be handled by an experienced saw user with protective gear. Leave anything large, uprooted, hung up in another tree or near wires to a professional crew.
