Tree Removal and Tree Service in Delaware

Delaware is flat, low and close to the ocean, so its trees deal with saturated soil and coastal wind more than with any single dramatic storm type. The state sets no license for tree companies, and the rules that do exist come from towns, especially at the beaches.

Low ground and wind off the water

Most of Delaware lies on the coastal plain, and much of Kent and Sussex counties sits only a few feet above the water table. Roots stay shallow in wet ground, so a tree that looks solid can tip in a long, soaking nor'easter without ever seeing hurricane-force wind.

Tropical systems do reach the state. When Isaias passed in August 2020 it produced a tornado that tracked about 35 miles from the Dover area to near Middletown, the longest path on record in Delaware, and left snapped and uprooted trees along the whole route.

North of the canal the land rises into Piedmont hills around Wilmington and Newark. There the usual calls involve big tulip poplars and oaks on older lots, and summer thunderstorms rather than coastal gales.

Trees Delaware crews handle most

Tulip poplar
The tallest hardwood in northern Delaware. Fast-grown tops break out in wind.
Red maple and sweetgum
Common on wet sites. Shallow roots lift lawns and tip in saturated soil.
Loblolly pine
Sussex County is near the northern edge of its range. Ice and wet snow break it.
Pin oak and red oak
Widely planted street trees now affected by bacterial leaf scorch.
Leyland cypress
Planted as screening, then outgrows the space and browns out from canker.

Permits and licensing in Delaware

Delaware has no state license for arborists or tree services, and no statewide permit for removing a tree on private land. A tree company needs an ordinary state business license, which says nothing about skill, so insurance certificates and ISA certification carry more weight here than in neighboring Maryland or New Jersey.

Local rules vary sharply. Rehoboth Beach and Lewes regulate tree removal on private lots, and New Castle County's development code protects trees on land being subdivided or built on. Most inland towns leave backyard trees to the owner but control anything in the street right-of-way.

If your lot is near tidal water or wetlands, ask before clearing. State wetland rules and local buffer requirements can apply to trees close to the shoreline.

When to act on a Delaware tree

  • Act now

The soil has lifted or cracked on one side of the trunk after a storm

Keep away and call. The root plate has moved.

  • This week

An ash has thinning foliage and bark flecked pale by woodpeckers

Decide this season between treatment and removal.

  • Plan it

A red oak scorches earlier each summer

Have the diagnosis confirmed and budget for removal over the next few years.

  • Act now

A limb is resting on the service drop to the house

Call the utility first. See tree on a power line.

Best time of year for tree work in Delaware

Late fall through winter for most planned work. The ground in the lower counties is firmest during a hard freeze or a dry spell in early autumn, which matters more than leaf-off because heavy equipment sinks in wet lawns.

Beach towns
Many restrict contractor noise and street parking in summer. Off-season scheduling is easier and often cheaper.
Oaks
Prune in the dormant season to limit disease spread.
After a nor'easter
Urgent work comes first. Routine jobs are pushed back a few weeks.

Delaware tree service questions

Does Delaware license tree service companies?

No. There is no state arborist or tree expert license. Check for liability and workers' compensation insurance, and for an ISA Certified Arborist where diagnosis or a protected tree is involved.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Delaware?

It depends on the town. Rehoboth Beach and Lewes regulate private trees, and New Castle County protects trees during development. Many other places have no rule for a backyard tree.

Why do trees fall in Delaware without strong wind?

Saturated soil. Where the water table is high, roots are shallow and lose their grip after days of rain. A moderate gust is then enough.

Should I cut down a tree because of spotted lanternfly in Delaware?

Usually not. The insect stresses trees but rarely kills established ones. The exception is tree-of-heaven, its preferred host, which is invasive and worth removing.
