Tree Removal and Tree Service in Arkansas

Arkansas is half upland hardwood forest and half pine and delta, and each half has its own way of losing trees. Ice breaks them in the north, tornadoes cross the middle, and drought followed by beetles kills pines in the south.

Ice in the Ozarks, tornadoes through Little Rock

The ice storm of late January 2009 put one to two inches of glaze on northern Arkansas. In towns such as Fayetteville, Harrison and Mountain Home it broke the tops out of most mature trees, and the sound of cracking limbs carried through two nights.

Central and southern Arkansas remember December 2000, when two ice storms two weeks apart did the same to pines and oaks from Texarkana to Little Rock.

On March 31, 2023 a strong tornado cut across west Little Rock, North Little Rock and Jacksonville, and another destroyed much of Wynne. Whole neighborhoods known for their tree cover lost it in minutes.

What kills Arkansas oaks and pines

Oak decline
Older red oaks on dry ridges die after drought years. An outbreak of red oak borer in the early 2000s killed red oaks across the Ozark highlands.
Hypoxylon canker
The fungus that makes bark slough off stressed oaks. By the time the crust is visible, the tree is finished.
Ips beetles
Killed pines in groups across south Arkansas after the hot, dry summers of 2022 and 2023.
Emerald ash borer
Present since 2014 and spreading from the south and center.

Permits, licensing and who to trust

Arkansas does not require a permit to remove a tree on private residential land, and it has no arborist license specific to pruning or removal. The state does license commercial pesticide applicators, so anyone paid to spray or inject your trees should hold a current license from the Department of Agriculture.

City rules mostly concern development. Fayetteville has a tree preservation ordinance that applies to land being built on, and several cities have boards that manage street and park trees.

With no state screening, the checks are up to you: liability and workers' compensation certificates sent by the insurer, an ISA Certified Arborist for diagnosis, and a written scope. After ice storms and tornadoes, unmarked trucks from elsewhere work the damaged streets. Some are capable crews. Others take deposits and disappear.

Trouble signs on older Arkansas oaks

  • Bark shedding to reveal a gray, tan or black crust

Hypoxylon. The wood beneath is already decaying.

  • Dead branches at the top after a drought summer

The start of decline. Watch whether it progresses the next year.

  • Large holes with sap staining on a red oak trunk

Borer attack on a weakened tree.

  • A top broken out by ice years ago

Look for a cavity and weak sprouts where it broke.

When to act on an Arkansas tree

  • Act now

Limbs are bending under ice near the house or lines

Stay inside and away from windows on that side. Nothing can be done safely until it melts.

  • Act now

A tree is on the house after a tornado

Call for emergency tree removal and contact your insurer.

  • This week

An oak lost its bark in patches this summer

Plan removal within months. Hypoxylon-killed oaks become brittle fast.

  • This week

Pines are browning in a group

Have them inspected. Removing infested trees may protect the rest.

Arkansas tree service questions

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Arkansas?

Not for a tree on your own home lot in most of the state. Rules in cities such as Fayetteville focus on development sites. Check locally if the tree is near a street.

Is a tree service license required in Arkansas?

No license covers pruning or removal as such. Pesticide application for hire is licensed by the state. Ask for insurance certificates and references.

Will an oak with hypoxylon canker recover?

No. The fungus appears on trees that are already dying from stress. Remove the tree before the wood weakens further, especially near a house or driveway.

How do I avoid storm-chaser scams after an Arkansas tornado?

Do not pay in full up front, get the scope and price in writing, and ask the insurer to send proof of coverage directly. A legitimate company will not pressure you to sign on the spot.
