Tree Removal and Tree Service in South Lake Tahoe
Tree removal around Lake Tahoe is regulated by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Away from the lakeshore, a TRPA permit is needed to remove any live tree more than 14 inches in diameter. On lakefront lots, trees over 6 inches between the house and the lake need one. A TRPA forester visits the property and marks the trees approved for removal.

A conifer is considered dead when it has no green needles. A deciduous tree must be judged dead by a qualified forester.
Fire in the basin
The Angora Fire in June 2007 destroyed about 250 homes on the south shore. In August 2021 the Caldor Fire crossed Echo Summit and forced the evacuation of all of South Lake Tahoe before firefighters held it at the edge of town.
Both fires reinforced the importance of defensible space: thinning, limbing up and clearing dead material around homes. TRPA and local fire agencies work together so fire-safety removals can be approved quickly.
Dense stands of white fir and Jeffrey pine, crowded after a century without regular fire, are at the heart of the problem.

Why the basin has its own rules
TRPA was created by a compact between California and Nevada to protect Lake Tahoe's clarity and environment. Tree removal, especially near the shore and in Stream Environment Zones, can increase erosion and runoff into the lake.
Enforcement is real. In a 2024 South Lake Tahoe case, TRPA found that four trees of 19 to 28 inches had been removed without authorization, and the settlement included a penalty and attendance at a tree removal seminar.
How do I get a TRPA tree permit?
Submit a tree removal application online. A TRPA forester visits, assesses the trees and issues a permit for any trees marked for removal. Tree removal for defensible space can be permitted by the local fire protection agency. TRPA states that the City of South Lake Tahoe does not issue defensible space tree permits and directs residents there to TRPA.
